At YOU Queensland, we are passionate about supporting people through their employment journey with our Youth Employment Services. Our employment support specialists help our participants identify their career goals and provide assistance in several areas, including finding employment in the local job market, supporting them through further education, and working towards achieving their employment-related objectives.
We offer employment support for individuals with School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) funding and Employment Support Funding. This is because we believe that no matter your age, everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve their career goals and find fulfilling employment.
We offer these services to the Fraser Coast and Gympie regions and are committed to finding sustainable, inclusive job opportunities for our clients within their local communities. Explore both of our youth employment support services below.
Our SLES Specialists work with a small number of participants, allowing us to focus on the key areas where each participant requires support. For example, money handling, work experience, time management skills, job-ready skills, communication skills, travel skills, discovery activities, and personal development skills. We work with our participants individually on a weekly basis for at least 52 weeks. Our goal is to assist our clients in moving towards gaining and sustaining employment either while at school or post-school.
SLES are designed to assist young people with disabilities in transitioning from school to employment or further education and training. These programs recognise the unique challenges faced by young people with disabilities as they enter the workforce and aim to provide them with the skills, confidence, and support needed to succeed in their chosen career paths. Here's an overview of School Leaver Employment Supports and how they help young people with disabilities:
Transition Planning:
SLES programs typically begin with transition planning, where participants work with Support Coordinators or Transition Planners to identify their goals, strengths, interests, and support needs. This process helps participants develop a clear vision for their future and set realistic and achievable goals for employment, further education, or vocational training.
Skills Development:
YOU Queensland's SLES programs offer a range of skills development activities to enhance participants' employability and independence. These activities may include job readiness training, resume writing, interview preparation, communication skills development, workplace etiquette, and practical skills training relevant to specific industries or job roles.
Work Experience and Internships:
To gain real-world work experience and explore different career options, our SLES participants are often provided opportunities for supported work experience placements or internships. These placements allow participants to develop practical skills, gain insight into different industries, build confidence in a professional setting, and establish valuable connections with employers.
Job Coaching and Support:
Participants in our SLES programs receive ongoing job coaching and support from employment specialists or job coaches. Our staff provide individualised support tailored to the participant's needs, including on-the-job training, task instruction, problem-solving, and assistance with workplace adjustments or accommodations to ensure success in the workplace.
Transition to Open Employment:
The ultimate goal of SLES is to support young people with a disability in transitioning to open employment or further education upon completion of the. Employment support specialists work closely with participants to explore job opportunities, assist with job applications, facilitate job interviews, and provide ongoing support after securing employment to ensure successful integration into the workforce.
Community Engagement and Social Inclusion:
YOU Queensland's SLES also focus on fostering social inclusion and community engagement among participants. Through group activities, peer support networks, and community outings, participants have opportunities to develop social skills, build friendships, and connect with their local community, which are essential for overall well-being and quality of life.
Collaboration with Employers and Community Partners:
YOU Queensland collaborates with employers, industry partners, vocational training institutions, and community organisations to create inclusive and supportive environments for young people with disabilities. By working together, we can advocate for inclusive hiring practices, provide training opportunities, and establish supportive networks to facilitate the successful transition of young people with disabilities into the workforce.
Overall, School Leaver Employment Supports at YOU Queensland are vital in empowering young people with disabilities to achieve their employment and career goals, build meaningful and fulfilling lives, and contribute to their communities. By providing tailored support, skills development, work experience, and ongoing assistance, our programs help bridge the gap between school and employment for young people with disabilities, opening doors to new opportunities and a brighter future.

SLES is designed for young people aged 16 to 22 who have a disability and are looking to develop essential skills for entering the workforce. To be eligible, individuals must have an NDIS plan that includes SLES funding. These young people may still be in school or may have recently left and are seeking extra support to make a smooth transition into employment or further training.
If an individual is eligible, SLES enables us to provide extra support, making the transition to work or further education more accessible for those with a disability.
To find out if you have SLES, start by reviewing your NDIS plan to check if it includes this specific support. If you're still unsure or need further clarification, we recommend reaching out to your NDIS planner or Support Coordinator. They can help you understand your plan's inclusions and explain how SLES can support your employment goals.
As a youth employment program implemented by the NDIS, SLES aims to find meaningful and sustainable employment that matches the individual's skills, interests, and career goals. This could range from part-time or full-time positions across various industries, depending on the individual's preferences, abilities, and the current job market.
Yes, we don’t just offer youth employment support. With our Specialised Employment Supports, we offer tailored assistance to individuals of all ages with a disability, injury, health condition, or mental health condition, aiding them in finding and maintaining suitable employment.
SLES is a youth employment program specifically designed for young school leavers with a disability who are transitioning from school to the workforce. It is funded through the NDIS and offers tailored support over two years. It focuses on developing essential skills and building confidence before pursuing further education, training, or entering the employment market.
DES, however, is a government program for job seekers of all ages with disabilities, injuries, or other health conditions. It focuses on immediate job placement and ongoing support to help individuals find and maintain employment. DES is not part of the NDIS and is open to a broader group of participants.
It is typically expected that those on SLES will eventually transition to DES for continued support in securing and sustaining employment as they move into adulthood.
If SLES support is included in your NDIS plan, you will be eligible to receive support for up to two years. However, the exact duration may depend on your individual needs and progress during this time.
We are based in the Wide Bay region and cover the areas of Gympie, Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Tiaro and Tin Can Bay.
No, there are no out-of-pocket costs associated with SLES for eligible participants, as it is funded through the NDIS. If SLES is included in your NDIS plan, the support you receive is covered by the funding allocated for this purpose.
